2026 World Cup: Mexico cruise past South Africa as three see red in chaotic opener

Mexico kicked off their home 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style with a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa in a dramatic Group A opener that produced three second-half red cards.

The co-hosts took control early and were rewarded in the ninth minute when Julian Quiñones capitalised on a turnover by Erik Lira, racing onto the loose ball before slotting through the legs of South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Mexico continued to dominate proceedings before the break. Quiñones struck the post with a low effort, while Bryan Gutiérrez missed another promising opportunity after being played through by the former Atlas forward.

South Africa forced to finish with nine men

South Africa’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after halftime when Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for hauling down Gutiérrez as he charged towards goal.

Raúl Jiménez then doubled Mexico’s advantage midway through the second half, rising above the defence to head home Roberto Alvarado’s cross and score on his first World Cup start.

The contest became increasingly heated in the closing stages. Themba Zwane received a red card after being judged to have struck Alvarado in the face, while Mexico captain César Montes was also dismissed following a late challenge on Khuliso Mudau.

Despite the late disciplinary drama, Mexico secured all three points to begin their World Cup journey on a positive note, while South Africa were left to reflect on a frustrating evening that ended with nine men on the pitch.
