Scotland 0-1 Morocco: Saibari help Morocco move closer to World Cup knockout stage qualification

Scotland suffered their first defeat of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 loss to Morocco in Boston, but Steve Clarke’s side still have a chance of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

An early goal from Ismael Saibari proved enough to separate the teams, although Scotland showed resilience and remained competitive against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.

Nightmare start proves costly

Scotland fell behind after just 70 seconds when defensive hesitation allowed Saibari to burst through and fire Morocco ahead.

The goal disrupted Clarke’s game plan, which included deploying Kieran Tierney in an advanced role partly to limit the influence of Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi.

However, the move failed to prevent the breakthrough as Scotland’s defence was exposed early, leaving the Tartan Army stunned.

Morocco, fresh from their draw with Brazil, controlled much of the contest and demonstrated why they are considered among the strongest teams in the competition.

Scotland show fight after slow start

Despite struggling for long periods, Scotland gradually grew into the match and created opportunities to level the score.

Captain John McGinn came closest before half-time but sliced his effort wide at the back post.

After the break, Scotland increased the pressure and twice appealed for penalties, first through McGinn and later Scott McTominay, but referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved away both claims.

At the other end, goalkeeper Angus Gunn produced an excellent save to deny Bilal El Khannouss, while defender Jack Hendry made a crucial block to keep the deficit at one goal.
