Religious leaders benefiting from Nigerias insecurity, hardship – Spyro

Afrobeats singer Spyro claims that some religious leaders benefit from Nigeria’s economic hardship and insecurity.

Speaking during an interview on Wazobia FM Lagos, the “Who’s Your Guy” crooner argued that many clerics are not speaking out strongly enough about the country’s challenges despite their influence and responsibility to their congregations.

According to Spyro, religious leaders have a duty to advocate for the wellbeing of the people they lead and should be more vocal about issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.

He suggested that some clergy members may be reluctant to challenge the status quo because they benefit from the current situation.

The singer also criticized religious institutions for what he described as a failure to provide proper civic and electoral education to their members.

He argued that churches and other faith-based organizations have significant influence and could play a more active role in encouraging informed participation in the democratic process.

His words …

“Nigerian religious leaders should speak up against insecurity. They should tell the people on how to secure themselves and include the issue of insecurity in their sermons. They should also give their congregants proper electoral orientations.

“Unfortunately, they are not doing that because the more the country is spoiling, the more money they make.

“Anywhere there is a crisis in a country, the people who benefit the most are religious leaders.

“We should make sure we hold all our leaders, including clerics, accountable,” he stated.
