Successful marriages are never 50/50 – Lawyer explains

A Nigerian lawyer has sparked reactions online after sharing her thoughts on the idea of equal contribution between partners in marriage.

The barrister, identified as Stella Justice Nnennaya on Facebook, argued that successful marriages are not built on strict calculations of who contributes more at every moment.

“Some Days One Person Carries More”

In her post, she explained that marriage comes with different seasons and circumstances, making it unrealistic for couples to contribute equally all the time.

According to her, there will be moments when one partner may need to carry more responsibility due to health, work, pregnancy, emotional stress, or other challenges.

Marriage Should Not Feel Transactional

She stressed that constantly measuring effort and contribution could make marriage feel more like a business arrangement than a home.

The lawyer encouraged couples to support one another during difficult periods instead of insisting on fixed expectations.

In her words:

“Marriage is NOT 50-50.

Some days, the husband will give 80 while the wife gives 20.

Other days, the wife will give 90 while the husband gives 10.

There will be seasons when one is sick, unemployed, pregnant, emotionally drained, or simply exhausted.

That is when the other carries more.

If both of you keep shouting, ‘I’ve done my own 50%, do yours,’ your marriage will become a business partnership instead of a home.

A successful marriage is not about equal contributions every day.

It is about two people who keep giving, even when life is not giving equally.

Do you agree that marriage is never truly 50-50?

Our marriages must work.”
