Harry Kane breaks record as England top World Cup Group L with Panama win

Harry Kane became England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer after helping the Three Lions beat Panama 2-0 and finish top of Group L at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After a frustrating first hour, England found the breakthrough through Jude Bellingham before Kane sealed the victory with his record-breaking 11th World Cup goal, surpassing Gary Lineker’s long-standing mark.

The result ensured Thomas Tuchel’s side finished first in the group and secured a place in the Round of 32, where they are expected to face either DR Congo or Senegal in Atlanta.

Bellingham and Kane secure victory

England struggled to break down a disciplined Panama side for much of the contest and looked vulnerable defensively in the opening stages.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 62nd minute when Bellingham reacted quickest to turn home from Bukayo Saka’s corner.

Five minutes later, the Real Madrid midfielder turned provider, delivering a precise cross for Kane to head home from close range.

The goal was Kane’s 11th at the World Cup, moving him ahead of former striker Gary Lineker to become England’s highest goalscorer in the tournament’s history. It also marked his 82nd goal in 117 appearances for his country.

England progress despite injury concern

England’s victory was overshadowed by another defensive injury after Jarell Quansah, who was filling in at right-back for the injured Reece James, was forced off during the second half.

Despite the setback, Tuchel’s side controlled the closing stages to secure their second win of the tournament after drawing with Ghana in their previous outing.

The match also saw Jordan Henderson make history after coming off the bench to become the first England player to feature at four FIFA World Cups.

England finished top of Group L and will now turn their attention to the knockout stage as they continue their bid to end a 60-year wait for World Cup glory.
