Chelsea have strengthened their defensive options by completing the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Serie A club Atalanta in a deal worth £43 million.

The Premier League champions confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old as preparations continue for the new season under manager Xabi Alonso.

Palestra becomes Chelsea’s latest addition after impressing during a loan spell at Cagliari, where he gained valuable top-flight experience before sealing his move to Stamford Bridge.

Defender arrives after breakthrough campaign

Palestra joined Atalanta’s academy in 2014 and progressed through the club’s youth ranks before making his senior debut in December 2023.

Last season, he spent the campaign on loan at Cagliari, making 37 Serie A appearances. During that spell, he scored once and provided four assists, establishing himself as one of Italy’s promising young defenders.

His performances also earned him a senior international debut for Italy during a World Cup qualifying play-off against Northern Ireland in March.

The move to Chelsea marks the next step in his development after gaining regular first-team football in Italy’s top division.

Alonso values versatility

Although Palestra has primarily operated as a wing-back, Chelsea believe his ability to perform in several defensive positions makes him a valuable addition to the squad.

Manager Xabi Alonso is expected to use the Italian across both flanks, either as an attacking wing-back or in a deeper full-back role depending on tactical requirements.

His versatility is viewed as one of the key reasons behind Chelsea’s decision to invest in the young defender, who is expected to compete for a place in the first team immediately.

The transfer continues Chelsea’s strategy of adding young talent capable of developing into long-term starters while strengthening key areas of the squad.

Palestra now joins the London club ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, where he will look to establish himself in the Premier League and continue his progress.
