A video of a pastor identified as John preaching on the streets of Lagos has gone viral after he advised young men to avoid romantic relationships for three years if they want to achieve financial success.
In the widely shared clip, the pastor, who was addressing passersby in a busy part of the city, argued that maintaining a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship before becoming financially stable makes it difficult for men to save money and improve their lives.
According to him, any young man seeking to succeed in Lagos should refrain from having a girlfriend for at least three years, insisting that marriage—not casual dating—is the only relationship worth pursuing.
The preacher maintained that it is nearly impossible for a man to build wealth or accumulate meaningful savings in Lagos while spending money on a girlfriend.
To support his point, he questioned why some men appear to struggle financially while their girlfriends seem to enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle.
The pastor said:
“Your girlfriend dey fat, you dey lean, your trouser don dey slack. Some men in Lagos, the money wey you dey give women don reach to buy korope. But common bicycle, them no get.
So, this is why we are telling you, stop doing boyfriend and girlfriend. Marry direct so you can save. As a young man, you never marry, if you want to make it in Lagos, stay three years without woman and you are going to make it.”
He further insisted that abstaining from relationships for three years would give young men enough time to save money and invest in building a better future.
When a man in the background questioned whether it was realistic for someone to stay away from women for such a long period, the pastor responded that it was entirely possible.
Citing the Bible, he said that “with God all things are possible,” encouraging young men to remain disciplined and focused on their goals.
