Cameroon win first WAFCON title after thrashing Malawi

Cameroon claimed their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after defeating Malawi 3-0 in the 2026 final in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday.

The Indomitable Lionesses settled the contest before half-time, scoring three times to put their opponents under heavy pressure and secure a historic continental triumph.

Cameroon had previously finished runners-up at the tournament in 2004, 2014 and 2016 but finally ended their wait for a first WAFCON crown.

Cameroon take control before break

Marie Ngah opened the scoring after 20 minutes, heading Cameroon into an early lead in the final.

The advantage was doubled eight minutes later when Naomi Ndjoah Eto found the net to put the Indomitable Lionesses firmly in control.

Malawi struggled to respond as Cameroon continued to threaten, with Ngah striking again just before half-time to complete her brace.

The three-goal advantage effectively settled the contest before the break and left Malawi facing a difficult second half.

Cameroon managed the game comfortably after the interval, preventing the debutants from mounting a serious comeback as they closed in on the title.

Historic triumph for Indomitable Lionesses

Cameroon’s victory completed an unlikely journey to the top of African women’s football.

The Indomitable Lionesses had initially failed to qualify for the tournament but were included after the competition was expanded from 12 to 16 teams.

They subsequently made the most of the opportunity, reaching the final and producing their strongest performance when the title was at stake.

For Malawi, the defeat ended an extraordinary debut WAFCON campaign.

The Scorchers had reached the final despite entering the tournament without previous experience at that stage of the competition, making their run one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

Cameroon, however, proved too strong on the night.

Ngah’s double and Ndjoah Eto’s goal gave the Indomitable Lionesses an unassailable advantage before half-time, allowing them to manage the remainder of the match.

After three previous final defeats, Cameroon can finally call themselves African champions.

The 3-0 victory in Rabat marks the first WAFCON title in the country’s history and completes a major chapter for the Indomitable Lionesses.
