You collect money but cant defend us on social media — Gov. Oyebanjis old video resurfaces

An old video of Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji criticising the performance of his political appointees on social media has resurfaced online.

The video has re-emerged as political activities and discussions ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.

In the footage, Oyebanji expressed frustration with some of his appointees for allegedly failing to defend his administration on social media platforms despite receiving salaries from the government.

Oyebanji demands stronger social media presence

The governor said his administration needed to take the social media space more seriously, particularly when issues concerning his government were being discussed online.

According to him, some political appointees were reluctant to defend the government because they were allegedly “eating from both sides”.

Oyebanji said some of them would remain silent when the administration was criticised on platforms where they were present.

He said: “We need to seize the social media space. You know, it’s not that they are winning the battle, but some of my political appointees, because they are eating from both sides. They cannot even come out and defend the government.

I’m telling you, may be few of them, they will be on a platform where they are attacking us and they will keep mute. They won’t be able to talk and they are collecting salaries every month. Listen please.

I’m marking them one by one. I’m not going to talk now. But be rest assured.

Those of you that are in a platform that they are dragging us and you kept quiet and you are collecting money from this administration, I will come back to you at your proper time.”

Video sparks reactions

The resurfaced footage has generated discussions among social media users, with some focusing on the governor’s warning to government appointees.

Oyebanji’s comments also highlight the growing importance of social media in political communication and public perception.

With political conversations around the 2027 elections already intensifying, social media is expected to remain a major platform for political campaigns, government messaging and public debate.
