Nigerian businessman Isaac Fayose has lamented what he described as the loneliness and disappointment he has experienced after years of political struggles.
Fayose expressed his frustration in a viral video while reflecting on his political involvement, relationships and experiences in Ekiti and Osun states.
Fayose recalls 2018 political struggle
According to him, his political disagreement with his brother became intense in 2018, when he joined him in confronting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He said he participated in protests against then EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu, repeatedly chanting, “Magu Ole”.
Fayose claimed the authorities subsequently asked about the person calling Magu a thief and allegedly sought ways to implicate him.
He said the matter continued to affect him, adding that he still goes to court over an issue connected to the episode.
Fayose also said his brother later secured political appointments, while his brother’s child was about to become a House of Assembly member in Egypt.
He said he was left to face his own problems while people told him to remain quiet.
Fayose recalls returning to Ekiti after wife’s death
Fayose further recounted how he returned to Ekiti after the death of his wife to support a political campaign.
He said he was in the process of burying his wife when he was contacted and asked to return home to help reclaim the state.
He said he was told, “Please, please, let’s take our state back.”
Fayose said he saw how people were suffering and decided to return despite his personal loss.
He said he hurriedly buried his wife before travelling home, where he spent his own money and did everything he could to support the political effort.
According to him, even on the eve of the election, politicians were still contacting him and asking him to speak with their preferred candidate.
He recalled being told that Oluyede, whom he said had not previously come to greet him, wanted to speak with him.
Fayose said Oluyede later returned to the President, while he and the governor they had previously fought against eventually became friends and were seen taking pictures together.
Fayose recalls Osun political experience
Fayose also reflected on the 2022 Osun State governorship election, saying he almost lost his head over the political struggle.
He said he was in Australia during the latest political development when Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke contacted him.
According to Fayose, Adeleke told him, “Isaac, we need you on board the election.”
He said he committed himself fully to the campaign and repeatedly declared, “We no go gree, we no go gree.”
However, Fayose said that six days after the election, Adeleke was already in Abuja presenting his certificate of return to President Bola Tinubu.
He said the development left him feeling as though he was the only person still committed to the struggle.
Fayose speaks on Wike and Tinubu political relationship
Fayose also recalled the political disagreements involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
He said he remembered when they were all shouting about Wike and making statements about what they would do if they were in power.
However, he said those involved have now embraced one another and are smiling together.
Fayose said the situation has made him question his place in the political struggle.
He added that people have approached him with money and even offered him a G-Wagon, but he rejected the offers.
According to him, his priority was not personal wealth but seeing his people progress.
Fayose laments political disappointment
Fayose also expressed disappointment that some of the same people he fought for during elections were allegedly still willing to sell their votes.
He said this made him feel as though he was the only person complaining about the direction of the country while others had moved on.
Fayose said, “e come be like say na only me dey see nyama-nyama wey dey go on for my country.”
He said he had become alone and described himself as looking like a zombie.
Fayose concluded his emotional reflection by saying, “Ah, I come dey alone. Come dey look like zombie. Ah! It’s lonely at the top.”
Earlier in the video, Fayose described Nigeria as a “bad country” and said he felt like an orphan and a lonely voice in the wilderness.
He said his experiences had left him questioning why he continued to make sacrifices when the political actors and people he fought for could later change sides or abandon the causes they once supported.
