Unbeaten Cape Verde reach World Cup knockouts, set up Argentina clash

Cape Verde have written a new chapter in their football history after securing a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 following a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia.

The result saw the Blue Sharks finish second in Group H with three points, edging out two-time world champions Uruguay and 2034 World Cup hosts Saudi Arabia to qualify from the group in their first-ever appearance at the tournament.

The African side will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32 on July 3 at Miami Stadium.

Historic achievement for Cape Verde

Cape Verde looked the more dangerous side throughout the contest and came close to finding a winner on several occasions.

Willy Semedo forced a fine save from Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais before firing another effort wide, while Kevin Pina narrowly missed the target with a long-range strike early in the second half.

Al Owais was called into action again late in the game, denying Laros Duarte in a one-on-one situation to keep Saudi Arabia’s hopes alive.

Saudi Arabia also suffered a setback in the first half when defender Hassan Al Tambakti was stretchered off after collapsing without contact.

Cape Verde’s qualification was only confirmed after Uruguay lost 1-0 to Spain in the other Group H fixture.

Following the final whistle, the players gathered around a mobile phone to watch the closing moments before celebrating the historic achievement.

The Blue Sharks became the first African nation to progress from the World Cup group stage on their tournament debut since Ghana in 2006. Ranked 67th in the world, they also remained unbeaten after drawing with Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Duarte relishes Argentina challenge

Midfielder Deroy Duarte described the achievement as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.

“Honestly, it’s mad. I feel like I’m in a dream. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always dreamed of playing in a World Cup.

“To be man of the match and make history is something I could never have imagined.

“First, let’s celebrate. We’re so happy. Let’s hope all Cape Verdeans are happy too. From tomorrow, we’ll focus on the next match.

“It’s against Argentina, isn’t it? A tough match, but let’s believe. Anything is possible.”

Cape Verde will now attempt to extend their remarkable World Cup journey when they take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina for a place in the last 16.
