A viral video showing a Celestial Shepherd openly describing himself as a “Yahoo Shepherd” has triggered widespread reactions on social media.
In the video, the unidentified cleric appears to speak about internet fraud, commonly known in Nigeria as “Yahoo Yahoo”, while making claims about the use of “soap” within Celestial practices.
The statement has generated controversy, particularly because of the perceived connection between religious practices and internet fraud.
The video has also prompted calls for greater scrutiny of claims that criminal activities can be spiritually supported or justified.
Viral claim draws criticism
The shepherd is heard saying, “I’m a Yahoo Shepherd,” while also claiming that “soap” is considered normal work within Celestial.
The context and authenticity of the claims could not be independently established from the viral footage. It is also unclear whether the cleric was speaking literally, jokingly, or referring to a particular practice.
However, the remarks have continued to attract attention online, with many viewers expressing concern over what they believe the comments could mean for young people.
Critics argued that religious leaders have a responsibility to discourage fraud and other criminal activities, rather than appearing to associate them with spiritual practices.
Nigerians react to the video
The video has attracted several comments from social media users, with some calling for the man’s claims to be investigated.
Okemadu wrote: “A Yahoo shepherd claiming potency of his soap, police no supposed to invite this yahoo shepherd of man, to have ideas of how many young boys he has initiated into his Yahoo flocks.”
Another user, Maxims, described the claims as disturbing and argued that religion should not be used to legitimise internet fraud.
“This is deeply disturbing. If these claims are accurate, using religion to normalize or spiritually support internet fraud is a serious problem. Faith leaders should be guiding young people toward honest work, not making crime sound acceptable. Religion should never become a cover for Yahoo,” Maxims wrote.
Michael Seseme, reacting to the footage, simply wrote: “See as he be sef.”
