Chelsea were forced into a late tactical adjustment ahead of their Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest after both Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho were ruled out through injury.
The pair were omitted from the matchday squad after picking up knocks in training, leaving interim manager Calum McFarlane to rethink his starting lineup shortly before kick-off at Stamford Bridge.
Youth call-up amid injury concerns
With limited options available, McFarlane turned to academy prospect Jesse Derry, handing the 18-year-old his first Premier League start.
Derry, who had previously made a substitute appearance this season, was deployed on the left flank as part of a reshaped attack.
Difficult start compounds problems
Chelsea’s problems intensified early in the match, as Forest raced into a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes. Taiwo Awoniyi opened the scoring before Igor Jesus converted a penalty to double the advantage.
Further disruption followed when Derry was forced off after a collision with Zach Abbott, ending his full debut prematurely. Chelsea were awarded a penalty later in the half, but Cole Palmer failed to convert.
In the second, Chelsea went behind again from Awoniyi’s second, assisted by substitute Morgan Gibbs-White.
White was later substituted after another head collision involving Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Sanchez himself was also substituted for Filip Jorgensen.
Focus shifts to Liverpool test
The absence of Neto and Garnacho adds to Chelsea’s growing injury list at a critical stage of the campaign.
The club now faces a tight turnaround ahead of a demanding fixture against Liverpool at Anfield.
Medical assessments are ongoing, with clarity expected on whether either player can return in time.
