Whenever I think about him, my heart breaks — Lady recounts death of mechanic apprentice after SARS raid

A woman’s emotional account of a young mechanic apprentice who allegedly died after being arrested during a SARS operation has sparked reactions online.

The lady shared the story while reflecting on her childhood experiences and memories of policing operations that affected young people in her community.

Football game allegedly ends in arrest

According to her account, the incident occurred when officers from the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) reportedly raided her street and picked up several young men who were playing football outside on a Saturday.

Among those arrested was her brother’s friend, a 20-year-old who had recently begun learning automobile mechanics.

She recalled that the young man’s family initially believed they would be able to secure his release. However, they were reportedly informed that he had been identified as a cultist and transferred to Kirikiri Prison.

The account has reignited discussions about past allegations of wrongful arrests and human rights concerns linked to SARS operations before the unit was dissolved.

Family reportedly receives tragic news

The woman further claimed that the apprentice’s mother later visited the prison in an attempt to see her son.

“While growing up, SARS once raided my street and picked up all the young boys playing football outside on a Saturday.

My brother’s friend was among them. He was only 20 years old and had just started learning mechanics.

When his parents went to bail him, they were told he was a cultist and had been transferred to Kirikiri Prison.

A week later, his mum went to see him. They told her he had died due to overcrowding.

Whenever I think about him, my heart breaks. He was innocent.”

Story fuels renewed conversations

The account has drawn sympathy from many social media users, with some sharing similar experiences involving arrests and detention.

Others said the story serves as a reminder of the concerns that fuelled nationwide conversations about police conduct and accountability, keeping public attention on the impact such incidents can have on families and communities.
