Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history.

Brazil attempted a late comeback after referee Ismail Elfath awarded a second penalty deep into stoppage time, ruling that Norway defender Leo Ostigard had fouled Casemiro inside the area.
Neymar converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit, but there was no time left for the five-time world champions to find an equaliser.
The result marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit in 36 years and ends their hopes of adding a sixth world title.
Norway, meanwhile, continue a memorable tournament after knocking out one of the favourites.
Inspired by Haaland’s clinical finishing, they have now reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time and will carry renewed confidence into their next knockout fixture against either England or Mexico.
