A Nigerian lady has stirred reactions online after alleging that she was issued a prepaid electricity meter linked to another person’s account with an outstanding debt of ₦406,000.
According to her, she visited the electricity distribution company’s office in Calabar after discovering she couldn’t purchase tokens with the account details provided on her prepaid meter card.
Sharing her experience, she claimed she was informed that the account attached to the meter had been registered in another person’s name by an official.
In her words, she said:
“I just left the NEPA office in Calabar. I was given a prepaid meter for my family house, but I couldn’t buy tokens. When I got there, I found out the official used another person’s name to open the account, and the account has an outstanding debt of ₦406,000.”
The lady said she immediately questioned the officials on how she was expected to use a meter tied to someone else’s debt.
She added that when she requested either a replacement meter or a change of account details, she was allegedly told there was nothing they could do.
“They said there’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t be paying another person’s debt. Please, is this how they do it? I don’t even know who the person is,” she added.
Her claims have generated reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences while calling on the electricity company to investigate the matter.
The incident has reignited conversations about transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electricity sector, with many urging the relevant authorities to address such complaints promptly.
