Why are people like this? — Lady recounts awkward encounter after buying shopkeepers child a snack

GistReel

A lady has sparked conversation on social media after narrating an unexpected experience she had with a shopkeeper shortly after buying a snack for the woman’s child.

The lady explained that she had visited the shop to purchase some items when the shopkeeper’s baby began crying for a snack.

Out of kindness, she asked the woman to give the child the snack and paid for it alongside the items she had bought.

However, according to her, the situation took an unexpected turn the following day when she walked past the shop and was reportedly stopped by the shopkeeper over another item taken by the child.

Kind gesture reportedly leads to unexpected request

Sharing the incident online, the woman questioned why she was expected to pay for another snack simply because she had bought one for the child the previous day.

The lady said, “Why are people like this? I came to your shop to buy something and your baby was crying for snack. I told you to give her and I paid for it alongside what I bought.”

She added, “The next day you saw me passing and you called me to tell me ‘aunty your friend has bought hollandia o so you’re owing me 2200’.”

The woman further expressed her surprise, writing, “I don’t understand pikin wey you born? So because I bought her something the first time I fucked up?”

Social media users share mixed reactions

The post has generated mixed reactions online, with many users debating whether the shopkeeper misunderstood the initial gesture or wrongly assumed the customer intended to continue paying for the child’s snacks.

Others described the incident as an example of how acts of kindness can sometimes lead to unrealistic expectations, while some argued that the shopkeeper may have been joking.

The story continues to attract engagement across social media as users weigh in on the boundaries of generosity and entitlement in everyday interactions.
