A Nigerian lady has stirred mixed reactions online after sharing her opinion on why many men are eager to get married, claiming that marriage primarily benefits men by giving them access to free labour and other privileges.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she argued that many men view marriage as a way to enjoy services they would otherwise have to pay for, including cooking, sex and childcare.
In her words, she said:
“Men are so obsessed with marriage because it is the only time that they enjoy free labor, free chef, free sex. They know that it’s very expensive. If they have to pay for everything, including sex, they can’t afford it. So they marry so that they can have endless pleasure for free.
They enjoy free children only in marriage. A man can literally not contribute anything to a child’s life. But because he married you as a woman, those children automatically belong to him.”
The lady further claimed that many women are expected to shoulder domestic responsibilities even when both partners work full-time, arguing that society often treats cooking and other household chores as the woman’s responsibility.
She maintained that if men were expected to provide the same services they receive in marriage by paying for them, many would not be as eager to get married. According to her, this is why some men strongly defend the institution of marriage.
Her remarks have since generated heated reactions online, with many agreeing with parts of her argument, while others disagreed, insisting that healthy marriages are built on mutual love, support and shared responsibilities.
