Flying Eagles miss 2027 U-20 AFCON, World Cup after Burkina Faso defeat

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will miss the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final on Sunday.

The loss at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the continental tournament serving as the qualifying competition for the global event.

Burkina Faso punish Nigeria before half-time

The Young Stallions took control of the final with a dominant first-half performance, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb before the interval.

Alassana Bagayogo opened the scoring before Asharaf Tapsoba and Issouf Dabo struck to give Burkina Faso a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.

Nigeria had already suffered a 2-0 defeat to the same opponents during the group stage, and the final provided another reminder of Burkina Faso’s superiority throughout the tournament.

The Flying Eagles improved after the restart and pulled one goal back through Abdulmuiz Adeleke.

The response briefly raised hopes of a comeback, but Burkina Faso remained composed and prevented Nigeria from building further momentum.

Fadil Barro eventually added a fourth goal late in the match to complete a convincing victory and secure the regional title for the Young Stallions.

Nigeria suffer major qualification setback

The defeat leaves Nigeria as runners-up and means the seven-time African champions will not feature at next year’s U-20 AFCON.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, qualified for the continental tournament alongside hosts Ghana as WAFU Zone B’s representatives.

For the Flying Eagles, however, the defeat represents a significant setback. Nigeria have now lost the opportunity to compete for the 2027 U-20 AFCON title and will also be absent from the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
