Canada seeks 5 skilled healthcare, social service professionals from Nigerians, others

The Canadian government has called on qualified healthcare and social service professionals from around the world to consider relocating to the country, citing ongoing shortages in its healthcare system.

The announcement was shared by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on its official X account, highlighting professionals who may explore available immigration pathways to Canada.

5 professions Canada is seeking

Qualified professionals in the following fields are encouraged to explore available opportunities:

  1. Nurse practitioners
  2. Dentists
  3. Pharmacists
  4. Psychologist
  5. Social workers

According to the Canadian government, interested candidates need the appropriate training, verified qualifications and relevant work experience in their respective professions.

The five professions cover different areas of essential services, including frontline medical care, pharmaceutical services, mental health support and community assistance.

Canada has encouraged professionals interested in relocating to explore its existing immigration pathways and determine which option matches their qualifications and work experience.

What this means for Nigerians

For Nigerians and other Africans working in these fields, the announcement provides an opportunity to explore employment and immigration options in Canada.

However, being among the professions highlighted by the government does not automatically guarantee a job, visa or permanent residence. Applicants must still meet the relevant immigration requirements and, where applicable, obtain recognition or licensing for their professional qualifications.

Canada has faced ongoing healthcare workforce shortages, prompting efforts to attract qualified professionals from abroad.

The latest announcement reinforces the country’s continued focus on attracting skilled workers to strengthen its healthcare and social service workforce.
