France 3-1 Senegal: Mbappe breaks French scoring record in World Cup win

Kylian Mbappe became France’s all-time leading goalscorer after scoring twice in a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Real Madrid forward surpassed former record holder Olivier Giroud by taking his tally to 58 international goals, helping France begin their Group I campaign with a strong win in New Jersey.

Senegal frustrated the 2022 finalists for long periods, but Mbappe eventually broke the deadlock in the second half before adding a spectacular long-range strike in stoppage time to seal both the victory and a place in French football history.

Mbappe sets new France record

After a tightly contested first half, France found the breakthrough when Mbappe fired a low effort past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The goal gave Didier Deschamps’ side greater control of the contest and they doubled their advantage through Bradley Barcola, who finished off a flowing attacking move to make it 2-0.

Mbappe’s first goal saw him draw level with Giroud’s long-standing record, while his second ensured he became France’s outright leading scorer.

The 27-year-old struck from distance deep into stoppage time, producing a powerful finish that left Mendy with no chance and moved him onto 58 international goals.

Senegal’s response falls short

Senegal briefly threatened a comeback when Ibrahim Mbaye reduced the deficit after France had gone two goals ahead.

The African side pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but ultimately failed.

Mbappe’s late strike ended any hopes of a Senegal revival and secured all three points for Les Bleus.

The result puts France in a strong position at the top of Group I as they continue their quest for a third World Cup title.
