Transfer: Coventry agree loan deal for Frank Onyeka

Coventry City are edging closer to signing Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka as talks over a potential move reach an advanced stage.

According to Sky Sports News, the Sky Blues are close to finalising a deal for the Nigeria international, with the transfer now dependent on the player’s final decision.

Onyeka is weighing up his next move as he considers options that would offer more regular first-team football.

The 28-year-old has recently returned from international duty with Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was a regular starter for the Super Eagles.

Onyeka featured in four matches during the tournament, including playing 119 minutes in Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco.

Limited role at Brentford

Despite his international involvement, Onyeka has struggled for minutes at Brentford this season.

He has made just six Premier League appearances and has yet to start a league game, with head coach Keith Andrews opting for alternative midfield options.

That lack of playing time has fuelled speculation over his future, particularly as Brentford remain open to letting the midfielder leave five years after his arrival from Danish side Midtjylland.

Onyeka is under contract with the Bees until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further year.

This gives Brentford flexibility in negotiations, whether the move materialises as a permanent transfer or a loan.

Championship move takes shape

Coventry are understood to be exploring both loan and permanent options as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the second half of the season.

Onyeka’s experience at Premier League and Bundesliga level is seen as a major asset as the club pushes its ambitions in the Championship.

The midfielder spent last season on loan at FC Augsburg, where he made 34 appearances in all competitions, gaining regular football in Germany’s top flight.

Birmingham City had also been linked with Onyeka in recent weeks, but that route now appears closed.

CoventryLive reports that Birmingham are no longer pursuing a defensive midfielder following the signing of Jhon Solis, effectively clearing the way for Coventry.
